Princess Diana's belongings auctioned in America (details)

Princess Diana's personal belongings, including dresses, hats, handbags, and shoes, are going up for auction in the United States this month, in what Julien's Auctions describes as the largest ever sale of the late princess's fashion collection.

The live and online auction, "Princess Diana's Style... A Royal Collection," will take place on June 26 at The Peninsula Beverly Hills, California.

"This is the largest auction of Princess Diana's history , with over 100 items from her incredible life and career, " Martin Nolan, executive director and co-founder of Julien's Auctions, told Reuters on Monday. " Considering that Diana herself sold over 70 of her dresses in 1997 to raise money for her charity."

Nolan was speaking at the Style Icons Museum in Newbridge, Ireland, during a pre-sale exhibition.

Princess Diana's belongings in America Among the highlights is a floral silk dress by Belleville Sassoon, dating back to 1988. It was dubbed the "Care Dress" because Diana wore it several times during her hospital visits. It is estimated to fetch between $200,000 and $300,000 when it sells.

A yellow-on-white embroidered silk gown designed by Catherine Walker for Diana's 1986 tour of the Gulf could fetch the same amount, while a yellow floral two-piece set by Bruce Oldfield, worn at Royal Ascot in 1987, is estimated by Julien's to be worth between $100,000 and $200,000.

Other items up for sale include a Dior handbag given to Diana by former French First Lady Bernadette Chirac in 1995, a sketch of Diana's 1981 wedding dress made of tulle when she married then-Prince Charles in 1981, and a peach-colored hat she wore to her honeymoon farewell party.

The auction also includes items belonging to other members of the British royal family, including the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Nolan stated that Julien's Auctions previously sold a dress belonging to Diana for $1.14 million.

He added, "People now consider these pieces valuable assets, because if people own them today, they are likely to sell them in the coming years for a higher price than they bought them at auction."

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of Diana's pieces will go to the charity Muscular Dystrophy UK.

The pre-sale exhibition in Newbridge continues until June 17.
