Shereen Ahmed Tarek... Information about the soprano who shone at the museum's opening

The internationally renowned Egyptian artist, Sherine Ahmed Tarek, participated in the opening ceremony of the Grand Egyptian Museum yesterday, Saturday.

Who is the internationally renowned Egyptian artist Sherine Ahmed Tarek? Shereen's father is Tarek Ahmed, an Egyptian immigrant who owns a jewelry store in Maryland. Her mother, Sandra, is of American origin and works as an English teacher. She studied human rights at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic, and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in sociology and anthropology with a focus on criminal justice from Towson University.

While studying at university, Shereen Ahmed Tarek trained in the court system, particularly in mental health cases, but her passion for art led her to take voice, dance, and acting lessons at specialized institutes. Shereen entered the world of theater when she conducted several auditions to work in musical and show theaters and auditioned to work as a singer on one of the cruise ships.

It is worth mentioning that Sherine sang Broadway songs during the audition, yet she was accepted and signed a two-year contract to work on cruise ships, singing songs by Celine Dion, Mariah Carey and Tina Turner.

Shirin was accepted to play the role of Eliza Doolittle in a new production of My Fair Lady by Lincoln Center Theatre and directed by Bartlett Sher. She was appointed as Laura Bentani’s understudy for more than a year, during which she rehearsed daily to perform her role, before she had the opportunity to stand on Broadway’s stage herself to perform this role. An understudy is someone who memorizes the role of one of the actresses, so that she can replace that actress’s role when necessary.

In December 2019, after the end of the Broadway show, the Lincoln Center Theatre Company chose Sherine to play the role of Eliza Doolittle in a tour of the play My Fair Lady across America, opening the doors of stardom wide for Sherine and making her the first Egyptian artist to star in a Broadway production.
