Amitabh Bachchan is an Indian singer, actor, writer, producer and TV host born on October 11, 1942. He gained popularity in the early 1970s with many prominent films such as Zanjeer and Deewar. He was known as the angry young man of Indian cinema and has since appeared in more than 200 films in a career spanning more than 40 years.

It is worth noting that Amitabh Bachchan is considered one of the greatest and most influential actors in the history of Indian cinema, due to his influence and dominance of the cinematic scene in the seventies and eighties of the twentieth century. French director François Truffaut called him the only man of the film industry.

In this context, Amitabh Bachchan has won many major awards in his career, including three National Film Awards for Best Actor, shared with Kamal Haasan and Mammootty, about 14 Filmfare Awards, and many other awards at international film festivals.

Amitabh Bachchan is the most nominated actor at Filmfare Awards in major categories with around 39 nominations. In addition to acting, Bachchan has worked as a singer, film producer and television presenter. He also had experience in politics in the 1980s.

The Indian government honoured Bachchan with the Padma Shri award in 1984. Bachchan also received the Padma Bhushan in 2001 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2015 for his contributions to the arts.

It is noteworthy that Bachchan made his Hollywood debut in the 2013 film The Great Gatsby, playing the role of Meyer Wolfshiem.

Bachchan was born in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, to his father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, a poet, and his mother, Teji Bachchan, a Sikh from Faisalabad. Amitabh's name was initially Inqilab, inspired by the famous phrase that was popular during the Indian struggle for independence, meaning Long live the revolution. Harivansh changed the name to Amitabh, which means "long live the revolution", at the suggestion of the Indian poet Sumitranandan Pant. Although Harivansh's surname was Shrivastava, Bachchan was adopted as Amitabh's surname, as he published his literary works under the name Bachchan. This is how Bachchan first appeared in films and it became the surname of all his family members. Amitabh's father died in 2003, while his mother died in 2007.

Amitabh Bachchan is the eldest son of Harivansh, and has a brother named Ajitabh. His mother was interested in theatre and was offered a role in a film, but she preferred her household duties.

On the other hand, Amitabh Bachchan studied in several schools and is a graduate of Sherwood College, Nainital. He also studied at Kirori Mal College, University of Delhi, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree.

Bachchan also worked for a while as a shipping broker for a shipping company in Calcutta.

Amitabh Bachchan's first appearance

Bachchan made his first film appearance with just his voice, as the narrator in the 1969 film Bhuvan Shome.

He then got his first role in the film Saat Hindustani directed by Khwaja Ahmed Abbas and co-starring Utpal Dutt, Anwar Ali, brother of comedian Mahmood Ali Madhu and Jalal Agha.

This was followed by Anand in 1971 opposite Rajesh Khanna, his role as a doctor with a cynical outlook on life fetched him his first Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. He then played his first negative role as a lover-turned-murderer in Parwana. This was followed by several films such as Reshma Aur Shera in the same year.

He also made a guest appearance in the 1971 film Guddi starring actress Jaya Bhaduri who would later become his wife.

In 1972 he narrated a part of the film Bawarchi and also appeared in the comedy Bombay to Goa. Many of his films during this period were not very successful but that was about to change.

On the other hand, director Prakash Mehra gave Bachchan the lead role in the 1973 film Zanjeer as Inspector Vijay Khanna.

In this film, Abachan appeared as the "angry young man" of Bollywood cinema, as Filmfare considered Bachchan's performance in this film as the most iconic performance in the history of Bollywood and he was nominated for the Best Actor Award for his role.

The film was a huge success and broke box office records to become the highest grossing film of the year and made Bachchan a huge star. From then on, Bachchan became one of the most successful and brightest leading men in the film industry. Also in 1973, Bachchan married Jaya Bhaduri, who co-starred with him in Zanjeer.

Amitabh Bachchan has received many film awards. Amitabh Bachchan has been honored many times for his achievements in Indian cinema.

In 1991, he became the first artist to receive the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award, an award established in honour of Raj Kapoor.

Bachchan was also crowned the Star of the Millennium in 2000 by Filmfare, and the Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri in 1984, the Padma Bhushan in 2001, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2015.[70] In recognition of his exceptional career in and outside the film world, the French government awarded him the Legion of Honour in 2007, a French order created by Napoleon Bonaparte and considered France's highest official honour.

While in 1999, Bachchan was voted the greatest star of screen and stage in a BBC online poll, coming in first place and being named the star of the millennium, beating many stars such as Charlie Chaplin, Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro, Marilyn Monroe and others.

Also in 2001 he was honored with the Actor of the Century Award at the Alexandria International Film Festival in Egypt in recognition of his contributions to the world of cinema.[73] He has also been honored many times at many international film festivals including the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Asian Film Festival in 2010.

Also in June 2000, Bachchan became the first living Asian to have a wax statue installed at Madame Tussauds in London. Other statues of Bachchan were installed in New York in 2009, Hong Kong in 2011, Bangkok in 2011, and Washington in 2012.
