Vincent loved his mother and father so much that when his mother broke her leg in 1884, he drew the church in their village for her because she was unable to visit it. He painted it to cheer her up and let her see her favorite church from her home.

The relationship between Vincent and Goubel became increasingly strained over the years, and in May 1875, he was transferred to the firm's Paris branch. The summer of 1876 was a religious time for Vincent van Gogh. Although he was raised in a religious family, it was not until this age that he began to dedicate his life to the church in earnest.
Vincent van Gogh chose to remain in the Netherlands after visiting his family at Christmas. After working briefly in a bookstore in Dordrecht in early 1877, Vincent left for Amsterdam on May 9 to prepare for his university entrance examination to study theology.

Vincent received lessons in Greek, Latin, and mathematics, but due to his lack of proficiency, he was eventually forced to leave school after fifteen months. Mauve had established himself as a successful artist, and from his home in The Hague, he supplied Vincent with his first set of watercolors, and Vincent thus began to work with colors. Vincent greatly admired Mauve's work and was grateful to him. Vincent viewed these paintings as a continuing development of his craft, preparing for his most successful works to date. Vincent worked on these studies throughout March and April, briefly distracted by the death of his father on March 26. Vincent's relationship with his father had been very strained in the last few years, and while he was certainly not happy about his death, he was emotionally detached from him, which allowed him to continue working normally.

The first weeks of 1889 were not easy for Vincent van Gogh.
